Northeast Ohioans love to enjoy the sun, but doctors warn getting a tan or worse, a burn, simply isn't safe.

Dermatologists advise people to invest early and often in sunscreens that offer broad spectrum, UVA/UVB protection with an SPF of 50.

"The earlobes are a huge area that people forget, and we see types of pre-cancerous skin lesions called actinic keratosis develop on the ears very very frequently," says Dr. Joseph Merola of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

While those spray-on sunscreens are convenient, more of it can go into the air than on your skin.

"The problem with the spray-on sunscreens is that we don't tend to use enough of it," Dr. Merola says.

If you want to boost your personal sun protection factor, look for cosmetics that contain sunscreen including powders that can be reapplied all day.  Consider getting a fashion forward wide brimmed hat too.

Most clothing has a protection factor of about five, but you increase that number by washing your clothes in products like Rit Sunguard.

"Washing your laundry with that material increases the SPF of your clothing to about 30," Dr. Merola says.

Know your options without getting burned this summer.
