WILLOUGHBY HILLS -- Officials were searching for a woman after she was thrown from a car in an overnight accident that killed one person and sent another to the hospital.
The driver of a car, one of three females inside, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree on Chagrin River Road, just south of Chardon Road, early Tuesday morning, officials say.
One of the occupants died. Two others were thrown from the car.
The official police report reads that, at about 12:29 a.m. Tuesday, Willoughby Hills police and fire were dispatched to a car accident on River Road, south of Chardon Road.
Responding emergency personnel found a small car in a ditch, fully engulfed by flames. Officers with fire extinguishers tried to approach the car and look for victims but were unable to get close because of the intense fire and heat.
A woman passenger, 20, was found outside the car and later identified as Brittany N. Totty, of Tungsten Road in Euclid. She was taken to Hillcrest Hospital.
After the fire was extinguished, human remains were located in the front seat of the car. Lake County Coronoer Dr. Smith responded to the scene.
The remains were removed from the car and the identity of the driver is pending DNA results. The crash is under investigation and alcohol is believed to be involved.
Crews searched the wooded area near the crash for the third victim. They used a medical helicopter with a search light and infrared technology in their efforts to locate her.
The other victims' identities have not been released, as officials continue their investigation.
Chagrin River Road reopened just before 5 a.m.
