The Westlake High School boys basketball team has forfeited six
wins after the school's administration discovered that a
team member committed an Ohio High School Athletic Association
violation.
OHSAA General Sports Regulation Rule 6.3 states
that a student-athlete may not participate in an athletic contest,
tryout or any type of team or group training or practices on a
non-interscholastic squad in a team sport in the same sport during the
school's interscholastic sports season.
According to a statement released by athletic director Tony Cipollone, the Westlake
administration was made aware of the possible OHSAA violation on Feb.
15. and upon investigation, found it to be true.
Westlake then self-reported the violation to the OHSAA and received guidance as to the proper penalty.
The
common penalty for such a violation is for the school to hold the
player out of two games for every one one the student-athlete
participated in. Thus, the player was suspended for two games.
The
penalty also requires the forfeiture of any games in which the
particular player participated in while ineligible.
Westlake has forfeited its boys basketball wins
against Midpark (Jan. 22), Olmsted Falls (Jan. 25), Avon (Jan. 26),
Amherst Steele (Jan. 29), Avon Lake (Feb. 1) and North Olmsted (Feb. 8)
The team's corrected record now stands at 7-14 overall and 3-10 in the Southwestern Conference.
Westlake earned the third seed in the upcoming Midview Sectional/District Tournament.
