COLUMBUS - Fourth-ranked Shaker Heights held off No. 5 Sylvania Northview's offensive pressure to defeat the defending champions 3-1 in the 2013 Ohio Hugh School Athletic Association ice hockey state championship game Saturday evening at Nationwide Arena in Columbus.
The state championship victory gave the Red Raiders (28-7-0) their fourth title in 11 state tournament appearances. Shaker Heights' last championship came in 2001. Four championships propels Shaker Heights into sole possession of third place on the all-time ice hockey champions list behind Lakewood St. Edward (11) and Bowling Green (6).
Two first period goals put Shaker Heights in the driver's seat from the onset, despite continued pressure from Northview. The Red Raiders scored first, just three minutes into the game, on a goal from senior Jonathan Greenberg. Northview answered with a power-play goal just a minute later in the period. The Wildcats goal was scored by senior Nick LaPlante, assisted by senior Zander Pryor and junior Kooper Carter.
Shaker Heights senior John Longman gave the Red Raiders back the lead for good later in the first period with a goal on a good crossing pass from teammate Connor Siwik. The senior Siwik would score Shaker Heights' third goal, assisted by senior Jacob Shick and junior Max Yauch, on a 5-3 man power-play advantage with 9:13 remaining in the game. Yauch was credited with two assists in the game.
Red Raiders senior goaltender Eric Sterin weathered consistent offensive pressure from Northview, stopping 25 of 26 shots on the evening, allowing only the one goal. Shaker Heights totaled 23 shots on goal offensively.
Northview, playing in its third championship game in four years, finishes as state runner-up for the fifth time in program history. The Wildcats were runners-up in 2010 and now 2013, winning the school's one title in 2012. Northview finishes the season at 27-8-0.
