Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - U.S. Solheim Cup captain Meg Mallon added Laura
Diaz as her second assistant captain on Wednesday.
Diaz is a four-time Solheim Cup performer and went 6-6-1 with a 3-1 mark in
singles matches in those four appearances. Those U.S. teams went 3-1 against
the European squad. She joins Dottie Pepper as Mallon's two assistants.
"It is the greatest honor in my career. Playing four times was an honor and
privilege," Diaz stated. "I was in awe, surprise and shocked when Meg asked.
It such a great honor to be asked."
The 37-year-old Diaz has two wins in her tour career. She will be Mallon's
eyes and ears on tour. Of the three captains, Diaz is the only one still
actively playing.
"She was on my short list for a long time. Having her be out here week in and
week out will be invaluable," Mallon said. "Laura has also proven that she
still has game and is capable of having a big year on Tour this season. If the
opportunity arises, I believe she could handle being a playing assistant."
The 2013 Solheim Cup will be contested August 16-18 at the Colorado Golf Club.
The United States leads the all-time series 8-4, with the European team owning
the cup. The European team won the 2011 Solheim Cup, 15-13, at Killeen Castle
in Ireland.
Liselotte Neumann will captain the European team. Neumann played on the first
European six teams, which went 4-2.
