Coast Guard ends search for missing people in Lake Erie
NORTH KINGSVILLE, Ohio -- Coast Guard search teams have suspended their search for two missing people in Lake Erie who were last seen on an inflatable raft 500 yards offshore in Ashtabula County.
The Coast Guard says it ended its search around 9:30 a.m. Monday. It also says it doesn't plan to resume searching unless there are developments or reports of missing people.
A witness told authorities they lost sight of the people in distress as one tried swimming the raft to shore late Monday.
The Coast Guard used a 25-foot response boat and helicopter to hunt for the missing people. The search area was Ashtabula Harbor near Overlook Drive.
Three local fire departments assisted with boats and jet skis in the water.
Reports that the raft was found are false.
Authorities are asking the public to notify them immediately if they know of anybody who has been missing since Monday night.
No additional details were immediately available.
