Highway Patrol: Ashtabula County crash leaves one driver dead
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a 2-vehicle crash just before 8 a.m. Saturday that left one driver dead and the other taken to UHHS Geauga with incapacitating injuries.
The crash happened on U.S. 322 near mile post 1.
Troopers say that the two vehicles involved are a 1998 Ford Econoline van driven by Donald S. Heil III, 46, of Windsor, Ohio, and a 2005 Ford F150 pickup driven by Thomas Cappello, 52, of Huntsburg, Ohio.
Troopers say that Heil was driving westbound on US 322 and Cappello was driving eastbound on US 322. Heil apparently lost control and spun left of center and was struck head-on by the pickup truck.
Heil was pronounced dead at the scene and was not wearing a safety belt, troopers said.
Cappello was taken to UHHS Geauga with incapacitating injuries. Cappello was not wearing a seatbelt, troopers said.
The crash remains under investigation and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
