Senate confirms Carole Rendon as U.S. attorney of Ohio's northern district
Late Tuesday, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Carole Rendon as U.S. Attorney for the Northern Ohio District, acting on President Barack Obama's nomination in May.
Rendon has been serving as the acting U.S. Attorney in Cleveland since February, when Steven Dettelbach left the position to work in private practice.
"I am humbled by this honor. I look forward to continuing to work on our region's most pressing challenges, including the opioid epidemic and community-police relations," Rendon said in a written statement Tuesday night.
Both Senator Rob Portman and Senator Sherrod Brown recommended and supported her nomination.
The role is the chief federal law enforcement officer for 40 counties in northern Ohio.
“This is where I grew up. This is where my kids are being raised. This is where my family lives. This is where my heart is," she told WKYC's Sara Shookman in a February interview. "For me to be able to have the opportunity to work on the people of our district, has been just an incredible privilege. And it absolutely does mean more because this is me. This is where I’m from.”
“Nobody knows what the fall is going to bring and what the next [presidential] administration is going to look like, so I’m not even sort of looking past that point. If I have to hand it off to somebody else, when they take it from me, I hope they’re like, ‘Wow! This place is in really great shape!’ That’s the goal," she said in a Sara's Circle profile that aired Feb. 11, 2016.
As Dettelbach's first assistant since 2009, she has rooted out crime and wrongdoing. She was key in investigating the Cleveland Police Department and crafting the consent decree to reform the department.
“This is going to take a long time, but it comes with so much promise for our city, for the next generation. And I truly believe that five years from now, when I look back on all of the things that I’ve done in my professional career, many of which I’m incredibly proud of, that’s going to be the highest on the list,” Rendon said.
