Kid Cudi shared an important message with his Facebook followers Tuesday night: "Yesterday I checked myself into rehab for depression and suicidal urges," the rapper wrote.

Cudi, born Scott Mescudi, 32, explained that he felt "ashamed" and as if he were living a lie before seeking help. "It took me a while to get to this place of commitment, but it is something I have to do for myself, my family, my best friend/daughter and all of you, my fans. ... I am not at peace. I haven't been since you've known me," he wrote.

Without treatment, he said, he might have harmed himself: "Anxiety and depression have ruled my life for as long as I can remember." Cudi apologized to fans for his absence and assured them that he's still planning on releasing new music.

"The album is still on the way. Promise. I wanted to square away all the business before I got here so I could focus on my recovery," he wrote.

You can read the note, signed "Scott Mescudi," in its entirety here. USA TODAY has reached out to his representatives for comment.

Cudi isn't the only entertainer to open up about his struggle with depression. Bruce Springsteen recently wrote about his depression battle in his memoir, and so did Run-D.M.C.'s Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels. Selena Gomez also recently took a break from her tour to deal with depression, and Cara Delevingne and Kristen Bell are some of the many celebrities who have opened up about the disorder in recent interviews.

Fans have responded to Kid Cudi's Facebook message with thousands of encouraging comments and well wishes. Cudi's latest single, Frequency, was released Friday.
