University Circle ready for successful Mother's Day weekend after being voted No. 1 art district in US

USA Today announced the rankings Friday, and Cleveland ranks first among the top 20 districts across the country.

CLEVELAND — Cleveland's University Circle was voted 2021's No. 1 Art district in the nation by USA Today readers. The area is full of fun sights and sounds, just in time for Mother's Day.

"There's so much to do," Becky Voldrich, director of promotions for University Circle Inc., said. "People will have the opportunity to see the best arts in the country. Clevelanders, they always come through for us."

Whether you're strolling through a museum or want to take to the outdoors, there will be activities throughout the district.

"You could go into Lake View Cemetery and discover the historic grounds there. They've got monuments, the flowers are all in bloom," Voldrich told 3News. "There's a lot of scenic grounds on Wade Oval [as well].

Voldrich says all museums are open during the weekend, and "since it's Mother's Day, mom should never have to cook on Mother's Day." That's why restaurants in the area are filling up fast.

"We are booked pretty much solid throughout the entire weekend," Scott Phillips, owner of Guarino's Restaurant in nearby Little Italy, said.

Last Mother's Day was much different for eating establishments.

"We had just opened for a couple weeks and people were very afraid to go out," Phillips remembers. "It was uncomfortable while we were trying to make everybody comfortable."

If you take to the streets of Little Italy, you just might come across the Artisan Gallery.

"When people are waiting for a table at one of the four corner restaurants, they have time to kill," owner Eve Gualtiere said. "[Today I’ve seen] not just mother and son; it's more like families and people going to the restaurants, coming from the restaurants.”

If you are coming out to the museums this weekend, Voldrich asks that you purchase tickets ahead of time. You can find them, along with all safety precautions, on the museums' respective websites.
