The dead will keep walking for another year.

AMC announced Sunday night that its hit zombie apocalypse show, The Walking Dead, will return for an eighth season in 2017, one week before Season 7 is set to premiere on the network. The news was announced ahead of a two-hour retrospective looking back at the show's six seasons.

The Season 6 finale left fans in a tizzy, showing new villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) beating one of 11 characters to death, though not disclosing which one. Morgan, along with Tom Payne, Austin Amelio and Xander Berkeley, was recently promoted to series regular.

The early renewal is not surprising -- Dead has remained one of the network's biggest hits. The April season finale drew 14.2 million viewers, which, although down 10% from the previous year, still makes it a massive hit.

Season 7 of the show will premiere on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT).
