Meet the koala bears at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo!

Here are three facts you might not know about koalas.

CLEVELAND — This morning, we got to meet the cute koalas that call the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo home. Their names are McKenzie and Maya! McKenzie, also known as mom, gave birth to Maya at the zoo before the pandemic began. Both are happy and healthy -- and they both love the camera!

Here are three facts we learned today about koalas:

1. Koalas are very lazy and sleep 18 hours a day on average.

2. They are super picky! They only eat eucalyptus plants. Not just that, but they only eat the tops of the eucalyptus leaves. According to the zoo, because of their pickiness, they are forced to throw away about 80% of the plant.

3. As marsupials, they are about the size of a jelly bean when they are born. Then they crawl into mom's pouch to nurse and grow for a couple of months before they emerge once again.

A not-so-hidden fact: They are super cute! Go meet them at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo!
