New safety technology in schools: Mom Squad with 3News' Maureen Kyle

Over the summer, districts across the country took massive strides in safety and security in case of a school shooting.

CLEVELAND — Going back to school is bittersweet in many ways. But especially since the school year ended with the tragic mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that claimed 21 lives. It had us all wondering: Is my child's school equipped and prepared in case of a school shooter?

All across the country school districts spent the summer working on technology, safety plans and upgrades. Here in Northeast Ohio, security expert and owner of SACS Consulting and Investigative Services, Tim Dimoff, went into more than a dozen schools to assess their safety. He says a big change a lot of schools are making are upgrades to their security cameras.

“Any school can utilize a camera system that has a much sharper ability technology-wise. And, also, they have an artificial intelligence that can be added to these camera systems,” says Dimoff.

He says A-I cameras can notify school security when things look out of the ordinary, like if a person is standing at one second, then laying horizontally on the floor the next.

“These old schools, they can have gun detection artificial intelligence on them, as you saw in the video, and they can detect a weapon on a person,” says Dimoff.

Dimoff says one of the biggest safety measures anyone can take is, “See something, say something.” He says law enforcement has been able to thwart dozens of crimes because of anonymous tips.
