BEACHWOOD, Ohio — Petco Love, a national nonprofit, is celebrating the Lake Humane Society and some of the love stories between adopted pets and their owners Thursday that have been created with the society’s help.

Previously, Petco Love, in partnership with BOBS from Skechers, asked people who adopted pets to share how their lives had been changed for the better in order to help give the organization they adopted their pet from a chance to receive a grant in the Petco Love Stories campaign.

One of the stories that was selected from thousands of submissions was that of Megan Wessels and her dog, Bailey, who was adopted from the Lake Humane Society.

As a result, the Lake Humane Society will be receiving a grant award that ranges somewhere between $1,000 and $100,000 while Wessels will receive BOBS from Skechers shoes as well as a Petco shopping spree. The check unveiling will take place at the Petco on Chagrin Boulevard in Beachwood at 10 a.m. Thursday.

"These powerful Love Stories reflect the importance of pets in our lives. Whether the best or worst of times, the love of pets can change everything," said Petco Love President Susanne Kogut. "Reading these touching tales strengthens our resolve to create a world where every shelter pet finds a loving family, and no pet is unnecessarily euthanized. This year, we are proud to award more than $1 million to further empower lifesaving organizations, like Lake Humane Society, that work tirelessly to save pet lives."

Wessels adopted Bailey upon her return from a military deployment in the Middle East as she needed to recover both physically and mentally from her service.

"We are very appreciative of Petco Love for the grant funding we have received, the more money we can raise, the more lives we save," said Lori Caszatt, Interim Executive Director at Lake Humane Society. "Seeing a shelter pet go home with their new family and knowing they will be loved, cared for and safe for the rest of their life is what we strive for every single day. We could not do this work without the support of our community and funders like Petco Love."
