Lakewood City Council discusses changes to pit bull ban

Mayor Mike Summers laid out the regulations he'd like to keep, including liability insurance and breed-specific training for dogs and their owners.

In Lakewood, the controversial pit bull ban was again front and center, as city leaders proposed compromises to perhaps lift some restrictions.

At Tuesday's city council meeting, Mayor Mike Summers laid out the regulations he'd like to keep, including liability insurance and breed-specific training for dogs and their owners.

Last week, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) notified Summers that it supports “pit bull-specific laws and regulations” in order to protect pit bulls, other companion animals and the community at large. The PETA email to Lakewood provided a detailed fact sheet advocating for pit bull-specific regulations and an exhaustive 15-year medical study by a team of trauma surgeons in San Antonio's University of Texas Health Sciences Center.

Earlier this year, Summers notified council that the controversial breed ban would effectively end immediately, and he does "not see the merits of enforcing a feature we are likely to eliminate in the near future."

The proposal now goes to the council's safety committee.
