2 police officers hurt after patrol car hit on Cleveland's east side

The suspect is still at large.

CLEVELAND -- Two police officers were hurt when their cruiser was struck in a hit-and-run incident overnight.

Police say the crash occurred at E. 138th Street and Miles Avenue as the officers were patrolling the area in a zone car.

A 2005 Chevrolet Malibu was headed eastbound on Miles Avenue when it tried to pass to the right of a second car waiting to turn northbound onto E. 138th Street. When the driver of the Malibu swerved in attempt to return to the left lane, the car crossed the center line, turned counterclockwise and struck the police zone car.

The zone car was pushed off the north side of the road, causing its rear to strike a utility pole.

The driver of the Malibu, identified as Ernest D. Jones, fled on foot and has not been found.

One of two passengers inside the Malibu was treated and released from SouthPoint Hospital with injuries.

Both officers inside the zone car were treated and released from University Hospitals.
