The Akron Police Department is investigating two separate shootings that both occurred Sunday night.

The first shooting happened in West Akron just after 9 p.m. Sunday. Officers got several calls about a large crowd of people doing donuts and drag racing in a parking lot at Hawkins Plaza in the 1500 block of S. Hawkins Ave. Reports indicate there were up to 100 people or more in the area.

When officers responded, they heard gunshots and saw people in the crowd begin to scatter. A short time later, a 23-year-old man and 17-year-old boy were dropped off at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center by a private citizen.

Shortly after that, the 23-year-old man died from his injuries. The 17-year-old is still listed in critical condition.

The names of those victims have not been released, pending positive identification and until the family can be notified. The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office says it will conduct an autopsy.

The second shooting happened just before midnight at a residence in the 400 block of W. Thornton St. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a 21-year-old man with what was later determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. They also found a 20-year-old woman outside in the backyard of the home with a gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The male was conscious and breathing, and later told officers he shot himself. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital.

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct the autopsy in this case as well. The names of the victims are being withheld pending positive victim identification and family notification.

Guns and other evidence were taken from the scene, and the investigation in this case is ongoing.
