Akron police announced on Tuesday that detectives are investigating a homicide that occurred outside of Luei's Market, at 1012 Hammel Street. The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

According to police, a suspect armed with a handgun went behind the counter at the carryout and demanded money from the register. The clerk obliged and the suspect fled on foot with an undetermined amount of cash.

A customer in the parking lot who had witnessed the incident sprayed the suspect with "a chemical spray, pepper or mace." The suspect fired a shot, striking the victim and continued to run eastbound through Parklane Manor apartments.

The victim was transported to Akron City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim's name is being withheld pending positive identification and public notifications.

The suspect is described as "a medium to dark complexioned black male, 5'3", 130-140 lbs., with a short beard and was wearing a plaid shirt, black Carhartt jacket, blue jeans and white athletic shoes." A picture of the suspect can be seen above.
