CLEVELAND -- A suspect trying to escape police after an assault jumped from an 8th floor window, surviving when an awning broke his fall.

Police responded to a felonious assault cutting around 11:50 p.m. on Saturday on Ford Drive in University Circle.

A 23-year-old female victim was cut with a kitchen knife in her apartment during a fight with the suspect, whom she described as a friend.

When police responded to the scene, the suspect jumped from the 8th floor window of the apartment.

The suspect's life was saved when he landed on the awning of a Subway restaurant before hitting the ground.

Police found the suspect unconscious with severe head and skeletal injuries.

EMS transported the suspect to MetroHealth Medical Center.

The victim was taken to University Hospitals and treated for a laceration to her hand.

The suspect is expected to be charged after treatment.
