WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Barack Obama says there must be better medical information about concussions suffered by young athletes.

Today he held the first ever concussion summit featuring medical professionals, coaches, students, parents and athletes at all levels of sport.

The president says there's a huge public interest in having kids participate in sports calling it a central part of American culture that teaches teamwork. However, little is known about the long term effects of repeated blows to the head that several kids suffer throughout their years in sports.

President Obama says more research and safety equipment is needed and people must learn to recognize and respond to concussion symptoms. He says awareness about the problem has improved, but not by much.
