Ohio will need to extend curfew aimed at slowing COVID-19 spread, Gov. Mike DeWine says

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said on Monday that the state will need to extend its curfew aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Last month, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued a three-week curfew aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

But with the 10 p.m.-5 p.m. curfew set to expire on Thursday, Dec. 10, DeWine has already made it clear that he plans on extending it for an undetermined period of time.

“It will need to be extended," DeWine said at a press briefing on Monday to address the state's response to the coronavirus pandemic. "We’ll talk more about that Thursday, but it’ll need to be extended."

Gov. DeWine had originally set the three-week curfew in place on Nov. 19 ahead of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. The curfew requires non-essential businesses to be closed between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 p.m., with citizens expected to be at their personal residences at that time.

DeWine's decision to implement a curfew came as coronavirus numbers surged both in Ohio and across the United States. It also came amid speculation that DeWine could enact additional measures, including the closing of businesses and schools, as he did at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in the spring.

While DeWine has stated that the curfew came in place of such restrictions, he has also hinted at the possibility of additional measures in the weeks since the curfew was first enacted.

"We're in a very tenuous, dangerous situation and what I think everyone should be able to agree on is that we cannot let our hospitals get to the point where healthcare is dramatically threatened," DeWine said last week.

"The curfew, the additional mask-wearing, the inspection of retail -- we think these things have helped...but they have not helped enough," he said.

"We're going to have to do more. We don't have any choice," the governor added.
