New Lakewood rock climbing gym builds muscles, sense of community

Nonprofit organization celebrates popular fitness trend, while building "good vibes"

NOSOTROS Rock Climbing Gym just celebrated its grand opening earlier this month, and its feel-good workout already has a loyal fanbase.

The nonprofit gym, located in the basement of the Lakewood Baptist Church on the corner of Detroit and Lincoln Avenues, showcases “bouldering” - a low-height form of climbing that doesn't require harnesses or ropes.

Climbing walls are approximately 14 feet tall and are built at an incline. There are courses from beginner's through expert, with the youngest climber so far (with the assistance of her parents) being just two years old.

The facility also offers healthy snacks from a small cafe and a special training area featuring some of the obstacles from the popular American Ninja Warrior course.

Being a community-centered nonprofit organization, NOSOTROS is more than a typical gym.

Founder and executive director, Peter Stancato III, believes that bouldering offers a unique blend of physical fitness and bonding, helping to build a sense of community and “good vibes” while exercising. Stancato says he slashed his competitors prices in order to make rock climbing more affordable.

NOSOTROS Rock Climbing Gym is located at 14321 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood and is open Monday-Saturday, with Sundays being available for group rentals.
