CONNEAUT -- A fight between three inmates at Lake Erie Correctional Institution last week sent one to the hospital.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the owner Corrections Corporation of America confirm a brawl ended with an inmate transported to Metro Health Medical Center. It happened around 12:35 a.m. Thursday.

OSHP Sgt. Ron Scheinder says the two attackers used a padlock and a sock in the beating.

Steve Owen with CCA says the prison made the required notifications to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections and state troopers, who are investigating the assault with staff's cooperation.

Owen says the inmate was released and returned to LAECI Monday.

This is the most recent example of violence inside the medium security prison that has struggled with safety in two recent state inspections.

Scheinder says they will investigate the attack for future charges.
