Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Paul Gallagher sentenced James Lane, 19, of Akron, to life in prison, according to a news release.

Lane will be eligible for parole after 10 years. Gallagher also designated Lane a Tier III sex offender, meaning if Lane is ever released from prison he would have to register with the sheriff’s department every 90 days for the rest of his life.

On Sept. 26, a Summit County jury found Lane guilty of one count of rape, a first-degree felony.

According to the news release, Lane met the victim in the summer of 2015 and had sex with the victim in November of 2015. Springfield Township police opened the investigation after the victim’s mother discovered letters Lane wrote to the victim.

During the trial, Avery II, the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office facility dog, sat with the victim as she testified.
