Akron Police are investigating an accident that took the life of an elderly man on I-77, Wednesday afternoon.

Officers say an 87-year-old man parked and exited his car along the side of I-77 southbound near the Vernon Odom Boulevard exit, when he was struck by an oncoming Nissan Altima in the high speed lane.

He was killed instantly.

The victim was apparently trying to retrieve a license plate that fell off his car from a previous accident.

Police believe that speed and alcohol did not play a role in the accident.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and family notification. The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy.
