Akron man arrested after exchanging gunfire with police

He fired at officers and barricaded himself in a house.

An Akron man is facing charges after exchanging gunfire with police officers Friday night.

Police say they received a call around 11:30 p.m. for an armed man threatening to shoot someone. The caller said the man, identified as Michael Higgins, was "acting crazy, paranoid, possibly on drugs and tearing up the house."

When officers arrived at the home at the 1300 block of West Waterloo Road, Higgins exchanged gunfire with them before he barricaded himself in the house.

After a brief standoff, Higgins exited the house and surrendered. He suffered a minor graze wound to his left arm and was taken to a hospital.

Higgins is charged with felonious assault on a police officer.

The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave.
