AKRON -- A Summit County judge has sentenced a man to four consecutive life terms without parole plus 20 years for the sexual assaults on children during a sleepover.

According to prosecutors, Jeffery M. Burks, 54, of Baird Street in Akron, assaulted two girls when they stayed at his home overnight on three occasions in 2012 and 2013. One of the victims was eight. The other was six years old.

"Today we got justice for not only these two young girls, but also the many other people Jeffery Burks has sexually abused throughout his life," said Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh. "Hopefully knowing that Burks will never be released from prison brings a measure of relief to everyone he terrorized."

A jury convicted Burks on April 18 of multiple charges of rape and gross sexual imposition after deliberating less than an hour.

Judge Tammy O'Brien further found Burks to be a Sexually Violent Predator because of a lengthy history of sexually abusing young girls. He was convicted of Gross Sexual Imposition involving a young child. In 1997 Burks was sentenced to nine years in prison for two counts of rape involving an 11-year-old and a 14-year-old.
