Matthew Wilson to remain University of Akron president after losing bid for UCF presidency

UCF announced Friday that their provost, Dale Whittaker, has been named as president-elect.

University of Akron President Matthew Wilson was informed on Friday that he will not become the next president of the University of Central Florida.

Wilson was one of four finalists to replace the retiring John Hitt, who will depart after 26 years in the post. UCF announced Friday that their provost, Dale Whittaker, has been named as president-elect.

The other two finalists were Suresh Garimella, executive vice president for research and partnerships at Purdue University, and Mark Kennedy, president at the University of North Dakota.

After the announcement, UA Board of Trustees chair Roland Bauer released the following statement: “While others obviously see the same qualities in President Wilson that we do, we welcome his continued service as our president. We will move forward aggressively with the initiatives that have been launched to help make UA even more distinctive.”

Wilson was named the 17th President of The University of Akron on October 19, 2016, after having served as interim president for about three months. Before his presidency, Wilson served as dean of The University of Akron School of Law from 2014-16.
