An Akron elementary school student who died in a 2016 house fire was honored and remembered by classmates Thursday morning.

Students and staff at Seiberling Community Learning Center dedicated a new sensory room in honor and remembrance of Shanice Riley, 8, who was killed in a house fire. Her sister and parents were also killed in the fire. Shanice was a third grade student at Seiberling.

The sensory room, named the "Safe Room" by students in Shanice's former classroom, is designed to be a therapeutic space which includes special lighting and activities for students.

Students helped to plan the dedication ceremony which included messages that were read by classmates to share memories of Shanice.
