6-year-old boy killed in Canton shooting: 11-year-old boy suspected

The suspect has been charged with reckless homicide.

CANTON, Ohio — A 6-year-old boy has died following a shooting in Canton that took place Monday night. Police have identified the suspect as an 11-year-old boy.

It was around 7:50 p.m. when officers responded to the scene in the 500 block of 19th Street NW.

The 6-year-old boy later died at Mercy Medical Center.

Police said officers at the scene made contact with the 11-year-old boy, and he was taken into custody following consultation with the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office. He has been charged with reckless homicide, police said.

The Canton Police Detective Bureau is currently investigating how the firearm was obtained.

“Tragedies like this emphasize the need for firearm safety and safe keeping of firearms,” Canton police officials said in a press release Tuesday morning. “The names of the victim and suspect are being withheld at this time.”
