Cedar Fair Entertainment Company has announced that Wildwater Kingdom water park in Aurora, Ohio, will not reopen after the 2016 season. Its final day of operation will be Monday, September 5.
In a news release, Cedar Fair wrote:
Cedar Fair has been working cooperatively with both Bainbridge Township and the City of Aurora to redevelop the entire property into what will best benefit the surrounding communities.
After examining its long-range plans, Cedar Fair has determined that the time is right to begin this transition and will continue to work together with community leadership in the positive future development of the property.
Cedar Fair would like to thank the residents of Northeast Ohio for supporting Wildwater Kingdom each summer.
Wildwater Kingdom used to be the SeaWorld portion of Geauga Lake Amusement Park. It was transformed into a water park in 2005, and together they became known as Geauga Lake and Wildwater Kingdom.
It was on Sept. 21, 2007, that Cedar Fair announced the closing of Geauga Lake for 2008 and that the property would operate solely as a water park under the title Wildwater Kingdom.
Back in March 2016, WKYC talked with Ivan Schwarz of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission about the abandoned Geauga Lake property becoming a movie production site.
Schwarz said the area needs production-ready sound stages, which he is trying to build. One of the locations being considered? Geauga Lake.
"We've been looking at Geauga Lake as well as some other places," Schwarz said. "Boy, if we could build something in Geauga Lake, it would be a dream come true."
Shwarz says Ohio is losing movies to other states because it lacks "infrastructure."
Cedar Fair announced Thursday that it was expanding its Soak City and re-branding it for the 2017 season.
