Upon arriving to the scene, fire crews found the man dead on the first floor of the house. A woman was rescued from the second floor of the structure.

She was taken to MetroHealth where she is currently listed in serious condition.

According to an initial investigation of the incident, the man found the fire towards the back of his house. He attempted to put out the fire himself before calling the fire department.

3News spoke with Cleveland Fire Lt. Mike Norman who reiterated to Cleveland residents to always call the fire department right away and to not try to put out the fire yourself.

Norman added that it's fire prevention week. They are encouraging people to plan their fire escape and keep it updated-include kids/pets/plan for residents with disabilities.

Always have working smoke alarms. Also have 2 ways out of every room-doors/windows (make sure they function.) Have a family meeting place as well.

City of Cleveland is holding a city-wide fire drill sat 7 pm- when residents can practice their plan.

The victim has not yet been identified and fire investigators have ruled this fire to be "unintentional/accidental".

3News will update this story as more information is released.
