Vehicle ripped to pieces as 2 die in Cleveland crash following police chase

Pieces of the car were sent flying down the street.

CLEVELAND -- Two people are dead in a crash, which followed an early morning police chase in Cleveland.

The vehicle was ripped into pieces upon crashing with portions of it scattered throughout several front yards along Harvard and E. 151st Street.

The Shaker Heights Police Department says it started at 2:28 a.m. Tuesday when an officer witnessed a vehicle driving "at a high rate of speed" on Warrensville Center Road near Norwood Road.

Police say the vehicle had been stolen from Cleveland's west side. A police report says the vehicle was used for delivering Medicaid meals to residents.

When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly accelerated rapidly.

The pursuit ended with the vehicle crashing into a tree. Both people -- a man and a woman -- were ejected from the vehicle and died.

Witnesses say what they heard sounded like an explosion.
