CLEVELAND -- Thank you.

That's the message Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams gave to the community for their support in the death of officer David Fahey.

“Upon David’s passing, his family and the division of police received thousands of cards, letters, e-mails, phone calls and mementos to David’s life," Chief Williams said. "I want to thank all those who sent their condolences to both our police family and David’s immediate family.”

Chief Williams asked for continued prayers for all Cleveland police officers and their families.

“Law enforcement is a tough profession, and sometimes a thankless profession. None of us know when we may have to give the ultimate sacrifice for our community, but we pray that if that day comes that we will be honored and supported by our community in the same way that David was supported.”

Officer Fahey died in January after he was struck by a vehicle while assisting at the scene of a crash on I-90 West near Warren Road.

Israel Alvarez, the suspected driver accused of fleeing the scene, remains behind bars on several charges.
