CLEVELAND -- Detectives are investigating the death of off-duty firefighter Theodore J. Wright Jr. as a homicide.

Wright died after he was involved in a one-vehicle crash early Thursday morning on Claasen Avenue near East 71st Street.

Examination of his body by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office found the victim had sustained a gunshot wound to the torso.

According to police, Wright was in a pickup truck when he lost control, struck a utility pole and overturned around 3 a.m. Thursday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wright served as a firefighter for 32 years.

He leaves behind a wife and three children.
