Man gets 18 months in jail, 10-year license suspension for striking cyclists with car

He was drunk at the wheel of his car when he hit the cyclists.

A 27-year-old Cleveland man will serve 18 months in jail after pleading guilty to injuring five bicyclists with his car.

Rondell Dungy will also have his license suspended for at least 10 years and have to pay a $175 fine. Dungy was at the wheel of his Chevrolet Impala under the influence of alcohol back in June when he struck the five cyclists on St. Clair Ave. All five were taken to University Hospitals, and three were in critical condition at one point. None of them attended the sentencing.

At the hearing, Dungy expressed remorse for his actions, calling them "out of character," and the presiding judge agreed, citing Dungy's relatively clean criminal record. However, the judge also condemned Dungy for "a great deal of harm to some folks who were simply out riding bicycles.”

Dungy will serve his sentence at the Lorain Correctional Institute. He will also be under probation for three years upon is release.
