It happened shortly before 3 a.m. Monday on Arliss Drive.

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Fire officials are still investigating an apartment building fire that sent several residents to the hospital.

It happened shortly before 3 a.m. Monday on Arliss Drive.

Officials say the fire originated in a ground floor apartment. Four residents evacuated the building's third floor, including a 3-year-old and a baby. All four were taken to MetroHealth and one was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Four other residents were rescued from a second floor unit. They were taken to Fairview Hospital, where they were treated and released.

Officials say the fire was contained to the first floor unit, though five apartments suffered smoke damage.

The displaced residents are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

The fire's cause remains under investigation.
