6 months after Hurricane Maria, Puerto Ricans in Cleveland still struggling

We talked to family members of those in Puerto Rico, many still struggling to get back on their feet after Maria.

This Tuesday marks six months since Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico. However, 25% of the island still does not have power. Water and supplies are also reportedly scarce in some areas.

WKYC Channel 3 talked to family members of those in Puerto Rico, who are still struggling to get back on their feet.

Nereida Cunningham is from Brunswick, but she's currently in Puerto Rico right now visiting her family. Her family members have power, but she said many others still do not.

“Electric poles in a slant,” she said. “Goes on for miles.”

Her main concern is her 90-year-old mother, who needs medication and is failing to get the medical attention she needs.

“I'm a bit disappointed with how the doctor’s office is handling people who need to be seen, like my mother, who has not been seen for a long time,” said Cunningham.

The Executive Director of the Spanish American Committee said around 25 Puerto Ricans visit them each month in need of help.

“There is a need for beds, the air mattresses because people are sleeping on floors,” said Ramonita Vargas, Executive Director of the Spanish American Committee.

Tuesday was the deadline for those living in FEMA hotels to find new housing. However, that deadline has now been extended for another month, based on need.

“I believe it's April 23. We don't know much information. The government is not telling us,” said Vargas.

As for employment, the organization has seen about 600 relocated Puerto Ricans looking for jobs. About 250 of them now have found work, mostly in factories and production. The committee is now looking to place the rest in construction.

“Employment has been a big struggle. Transportation is one of the issues,” said Kenny Torres, Families First Program Manager at the Spanish American Committee.

The Spanish American Committee is accepting donations to help with housing, transportation, food and jobs. Here is a link to its website.
