As temperatures rise, Rocky River warns residents of possible flooding

Rain, ice, and melting snow could cause water levels to rise rapidly.

The city of Rocky River is warning residents to prepare for possible flooding in the area's Yacht Club basin.

Massive amounts of ice currently remain near the mouth of the Rocky River, which officials say could prevent the river from flowing normally. In addition, rainfall is expected along with melting snow, which could cause the river's water level to rise quickly.

While no evacuation order is yet in place, resident are being warned to leave the area immediately should they see any high water, instead of waiting to be told to do so. A person's safety can be at risk in only six inches of flooding water.

People should also plan ahead with these steps:

  • Plan where to go if evacuating
  • Pack important insurance paperwork, photographs and items of value, phone charger, etc.; for easy removal from your home including an overnight bag
  • Make a point to unplug electronics, move items off the floor and possibly turn the power off to your home before evacuating if warm weather allows

Residents with any further questions are asked to call either Rocky River Public Service Director Mary Kay Costello at (440) 331-0600 or the Rocky River Police Department at (440)-331-1234, extension 0.
