6 teens charged for Cuyahoga County juvenile detention center riot

Six teens are charged for the incident.

Six people have been charged for the Jan. 8 resident riot inside the county juvenile detention center.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley announced the charges Thursday.

One of the children charged is 14 years old. The others are 15.

The charges range from aggravated rioting to inciting violence, vandalism and disorderly conduct. One juvenile is charged with four counts of aggravated menacing for attempting to stab one of the jail guards with a piece of glass. Two of the teens are charged with attempting to escape for breaking a window and attempting to flee.

O'Malley said one of the teens involved was being jailed for involvement in the shooting death of a 12-year-old on Buckeye Road in November. That teen was being held on aggravated murder charges.

Five of the teens involved were being jailed on aggravated robbery charges.

The incident caused officials to bring in a SWAT team to de-escalate the situation and left roughly $200,000 worth of damage.
