CLEVELAND -- A Cleveland man will spend 15 years in prison for a wrong-way collision in April that killed a young woman and severely injured her boyfriend, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty announced Tuesday.
Julio Vargas, 41, entered a no-contest plea in June to two counts of Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, four counts of Aggravated Vehicular Assault and three counts of Driving under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs.
Vargas was found guilty by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Stuart Friedman. On Tuesday, Friedman sentenced Vargas to prison for 15 years.
Shortly before midnight on April 5, after a night of drinking at a strip club, Vargas entered the exit ramp to Interstate 480 at West 130th Street and began driving east in the westbound lanes of the highway.
After one car swerved to avoid him, Vargas plowed into a car driven by 22-year-old Antonio Rodriguez and in which Desiree Snyder was a passenger. Rodriguez was badly injured in the crash. Snyder, also 22, was killed.
At the time of the crash, Vargas was driving with a license that had been suspended after a January drunk driving arrest. He was convicted, under a false identity, of drunken driving in 2007.
Tests after the crash in April showed his blood alcohol level to be more than three times the legal limit.
