Man recovered after falling through ice at Shaker Lakes

Officials believe he was in the water for roughly 90 minutes.

A man has been hospitalized after falling through the ice into Shaker Lake.

The rescue happened on Shaker Lake near Lee and South Woodland. Unfortunately, it took rescue crews about an hour and a half to locate him underneath the ice.

The story began at 10:35 a.m., when Shaker Heights Police received a call about an abandoned vehicle in the driveway of a house in the 17000 block of Chagrin Blvd. Officers discovered the vehicle had been recently stolen from a Shaker residents. They tracked footprints from the vehicle north and saw them lead into Green Lake in the Shaker Lakes.

Firefighters were called to assist police when they saw the footprints lead to a hole in the ice.

Police and fire were also able to locate what appeared to be handprints where a person tried to get out of the water. Firefighters immediately jumped into action to try to find if someone was underneath.

After no luck the first time in, additional departments were called in with a dive team to help look under the ice, using sledgehammers in the process.

Finally, they located the man and pulled him out around 2:25 p.m. Officials believe he was in the water for roughly 90 minutes. Despite being submerged for a long period of time, he was taken to University Hospitals in the hopes of being revived.

Shaker Heights Police add that they received another call earlier in the day about an abandoned vehicle in the 17000 block of Scottsdale Blvd. The vehicle was apparently stolen from Cleveland. Footprints from that scene are similar to the one officers found near the Chagrin Blvd. abandoned vehicle.

The investigation is continuing.
