When a local father helped his 12-year-old nephew lose nearly 100 pounds 10 years ago, he had no idea the experience could transform them both.
“So I got to thinking,” Calvin Love said, “I wonder how many other children are going through something like this?”
That question led to a calling.
Love developed a 6-week fitness program for local elementary schools that achieved results that were not just measured in pounds.
“I notice immediately the physical changes,” Love said, “But more importantly, the emotional change. The self-confidence and self-esteem increase dramatically.”
Today he is taking that success further, opening what is believed to be Ohio’s first gym dedicated solely to 6 to 17-year-old children.
“Little Giants” officially opens Saturday at 627 East 185th Street in Euclid. For $25 a month, kids can get unlimited classes.
Coaches include two semi-pro football players, a Juilliard-trained dance instructor, and a dietician who can show how to make healthy meals.
“When people like that hear my vision, and see what I’m trying to do, they immediately buy in,” Love said.
Hopefully others will too.
The gym is a non-profit and Love hopes to establish other locations across the area soon.
