SOLON -- A man is dead following a single-car accident Wednesday on U.S. Route 422 in Solon.

Police say the deceased is a 46-year-old whose last known address is Novelty. They aren't naming him until his family is contacted.

He was driving a cream-colored 2008 Ford Escape eastbound a little before 4 p.m. just east of the Liberty Road overpass when he went off the road, according to police.

His vehicle struck several small trees, went over and embankment and came to rest in a drainage culvert. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Solon police and fire and rescue personnel arrived to find him dead. No one else was in the vehicle.

The right lane on 422 eastbound was closed for about an hour following the accident. It reopened for rush hour traffic but will close again this evening for several hours for continued crash investigation and so the vehicle can be removed.

Solon police are investigating the crash with the assistance of the Southeast Area Law Enforcement Accident Investigation Unit and the Cuyahoga County medical examiner's office.

It is unknown at this time whether the crash was caused by a medical issue or if the fatality was caused by the crash.
