LORAIN -- A furnace explosion this morning at Republic Steel in Lorain has resulted in three people being transported for injuries, and one of those was taken by LifeFlight to MetroHealth Medical Center. A fourth person was treated at the scene.

The Lorain Fire Department received the call at 8:35 a.m.

According to Republic, the explosion occurred in the melt shop when restarting the furnace after being shut down for the weekend.

LifeCare Ambulance Vice President Herb de la Porte said his company transported three people -- all men in their 40s -- to Mercy Regional Medical Center. Of the three, two had minor injuries, and one person was in serious condition, he said.

The men had burns and other injuries, according to Republic. All have been treated and released.

Republic temporarily shut down the melt shop while the company assessed the damage and completed its investigation.

Republic determined the damage to the melt shop is minimal and we anticipate starting production back up back up Tuesday.

The company says it is acting swiftly to put corrective measures in place to prevent future accidents.

The explosion also remains under investigation by the Lorain Fire Department.
