Police in Lorain are warning residents to beware of possible fake officers after a member of the department had his badge and bullet-proof vest stolen from his unmarked car Thursday.

Authorities say an unknown suspect broke into the car and stole the materials. The vest is black with pouches containing a flashlight, handcuffs, and spare bullet magazines. The golden badge was attached to the vest.

Officials are now asking residents to be aware if they are stopped by police. If you are approached by a police officer in an unmarked car you feel is an imposter, immediately call 911 or the Lorain Police Department at (440) 204-2100. Make sure to get to a safe area with other people around so the officer's identity can be verified.

Anyone with information regarding the stolen items is also asked to call the police department.
