The National Weather Service says its preliminary investigation has determined that a weak tornado touched down in Lorain County last night during severe storms.

According to the NWS, the tornado touched down in Eaton Township on Butternut Ridge Road and tracked southeast across mostly farmland for about a mile. The twister crossed Route 83 and lifted back into the sky north of Cooley Road.

The damage path was 30 to 100 yards in width. Damage consisted of mostly downed trees and several buildings lost sections of roofing.

Maximum wind speeds in the tornado were estimated at 86 mph.
