Make a Difference Day is set for Saturday, Oct. 22, and part of what makes this annual day of volunteerism so special is that organizations and schools from all corners of Northeast Ohio find their own unique ways to get involved.

At Kirtland Elementary and Middle School, children have organized a school supply in order to support the Cleveland Kids in Need Resource Center.

Each grade is responsible for collecting a different item on the “most needed supply list” which will help keep the center stocked this year. The Kids in Need Resource Center, located near downtown Cleveland, provides school supplies to students and teachers who need it most. The nonprofit is dedicated to the belief that no child’s academic achievement should be disrupted simply because they don’t have the proper tools.

The students will be delivering their collected supplies on Saturday to the center.

Make a Difference Day began in 1992 and has become one of the largest annual single days of service nationwide. The volunteer initiative is guided by TEGNA Inc., the parent company of WKYC, and Gannett media properties. The Arby’s Foundation and Points of Light are national sponsors.

“TEGNA’s purpose is to empower the people we serve and make a positive impact in our communities,” said TEGNA Chief Executive Officer and President Gracia Martore in a statement. “Make a Difference Day provides us an opportunity to do just that.”
