CLARIDON TOWNSHIP -- A 21-year-old Chardon man suffered serious injuries after a crash in which his vehicle overturned and struck a tree late Tuesday night.

The Chardon Post of the Highway Patrol says 21-year-old Brennan J. Martens was trapped inside the 1999 Volkswagen Passat involved in the crash and had to be extricated.

Authorities say the crash occurred around 11:44 p.m. when he lost control at a slight curve in the roadway on Chardon Windsor Road near Claridon Troy Road. The vehicle reportedly crossed over the center line, went off the left side of the roadway, struck a traffic sign and a tree before turning to its side.

Martens was flown from the scene to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown.

Investigators say speed and alcohol are suspected factors in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
