MEDINA -- Medina's town square is about to lose an iconic business. Whitey's Army-Navy Store announced Friday it will begin the process of closing shop after 65 years of operation.

The store will start a closing sale Thursday, June 26. The sale is expected to run through July.

Retiring store owner Jim Thwaite decided to close after attempts to sell the store were unsuccessful.

Thwaite took over the business from his father, Harold, upon his death in 1973.

"We have enjoyed wonderful customer relationships in the personal way that only small 'Mom and Pop' businesses can and we will deeply miss that," Thwaite said in an email to Channel 3.

Thwaite said there are no immediate plans to close the Whitey's store in Berea.
